Chapter 8
"Interesting," Raoul murmured.
"What?" Laura asked. It was some minutes since Raoul had emerged from the antechamber, leaving Malcolm and Donna Nerezza there, and some minutes as well since Benedict had gone through the curtains into the antechamber as well. A minute or two ago she'd heard a laugh sthat sounded like Emily Cowper. And of course she couldn't, in the view of all the boxes, ask her husband anything about it.
Frances was leaning over the rail to the Davenport box to speak with two friends. Like Laura and Cordelia, Raoul had been busily pretending nothing unusual was occurring. His gaze had seemingly been on her, but Laura realized he'd been taking in the whole theatre. She didn't mind. She was used to it. And in truth she'd be disappointed in him if he didn't remain aware.
"Carfax just got a delivery of a paper. From that footman now filling Lady Lucinda's champagne glass. He tucked it into his sleeve. Difficult to know if it's to do with tonight's other events. But either way—"
"It would be good to know." Laura smiled into her husband's gaze as though she had eyes for no one but him.
"Quite."
"Sorry to interrupt," Cordelia said, "but I couldn't help overhearing. I assume we want this paper?"
"If we can," Raoul said.
"Mélanie would be the best at getting it," Cordelia murmured. "But we should be able to manage. Of course, the obvious techniques for extracting a paper from a gentleman won't work with Carfax. He'd catch on in a minute."
"Let me try." Laura smiled between her husband and friend as though sharing a joke. "Governess techniques should be useful here."
"Excellent idea," Raoul said. "The Carfaxes appear to be leaving their box. If I read him correctly, I suspect curiosity will send him over here. Unless the paper is a note that drives him somewhere else. In which case intercepting him may be more complicated."
"He'll be curious about your being back," Laura said. "That should help."
"Presumably he'll know I'm back because it's the holidays and this is my family and I wanted to see Mélanie's debut."
"Carfax would never assume such obvious motives. Especially from a hardened spymaster."
Raoul gave a wry smile. "Carfax sees through me all too well, I fear."
